Less is More
Going on a week-long vacation can be exciting, but packing for it can be a hassle. The idea of having to carry everything you need for a week in just one suitcase can be overwhelming, especially if you’re someone who likes to have everything in order. The key to stress-free packing is to pack light. This means taking only what you need, leaving behind items that you can do without, and being smart about the items you do take. Remember, less is more. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you pack light for your next week-long vacation.
Step 1: Make a List
The first step to packing light is to make a list of what you need to take. Start by thinking about the activities you’ll be doing, the weather, and any special events or activities you have planned. This will help you determine what you need to pack and what you can leave behind. Write down everything you think you’ll need, including clothing, toiletries, electronics, and anything else that’s specific to your trip.
Step 2: Edit Your List
Now that you have a list, it’s time to edit it. Look at each item on your list and ask yourself if you really need it. If the answer is no, then take it off the list. If you’re not sure, then put it aside and come back to it later. The goal is to have a list that includes only the items you really need.
Step 3: Choose Multi-Purpose Clothing
When packing for a week-long trip, it’s important to choose clothing that is versatile and can be worn in multiple ways. For example, choose a pair of pants that can be dressed up or down, or a shirt that can be worn with both shorts and pants. You can also opt for clothing that is quick-drying and easy to wash, so you can use the same items multiple times.
Pro-Tip: So many places have laundry facilities that you can use on your trip. Keep this in mind while packing.
Step 4: Roll Your Clothes
Instead of folding your clothes, try rolling them. This not only saves space in your suitcase, but it also helps prevent wrinkles. Roll each item of clothing, starting with the largest items first. Then, place the rolled items in your suitcase. This technique is especially helpful when packing for a week-long trip because it allows you to fit more items in your suitcase.
Step 5: Pack Smart
When packing your suitcase, be smart about the items you take. For example, pack heavier items on the bottom of your suitcase and lighter items on top. This will help distribute the weight evenly and prevent your suitcase from tipping over. Additionally, consider packing items in your shoes to save space.
Pro-Tip: If you’re bringing a hat, pack things inside of it to save space and preserve its shape!
Step 6: Bring Travel-Sized Toiletries
To save space in your suitcase, bring travel-sized toiletries. You can find mini versions of most products, including shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and more. You can also opt to use hotel-provided toiletries if you’re staying at a hotel. This will save you the hassle of carrying full-sized products and save space in your suitcase.
Pro-Tip: I usually skip bringing toiletries that I can purchase once I reach my destination such as shampoo and conditioner, body wash, and lotions.
Step 7: Bring a Lightweight Backpack
A lightweight backpack is a great way to carry essentials while on vacation. You can use it to carry items such as your camera, water bottle, and snacks. It’s also a great way to keep your hands free, making it easier to carry other items or take photos.
Pro-Tip: My “purse” is a small leather backpack that I use as my personal item on flights. I pack it with my must-haves such as chapstick, travel toothbrush, socks, journal, AirPods Pro, Wallet, and Passport!
Step 8: Pack Light, Travel Light
The most important thing to remember when packing for a week-long trip is to pack light. This means taking only what you need and leaving behind items that you can do without. By following these tips and being smart about the items you take, you’ll have a stress-free vacation experience and be able to enjoy your time without being weighed down by heavy luggage.
Pro-Tip: Remember, less is more. What you pack, you have to carry 😉
